My pond edge is capped with cement pavers.  A few years ago I removed the pavers and sealed them with an ordinary, clear cement sealer and now that it's time to reseal (my pond pH is too high, which has me suspecting the pavers) I was wondering if I should look for a special cement sealer.  The last one I used (apparently) did not harm the fish.  Thank you.

Hi Renee:

You might consider "pond armor/pond shield"

http://www.pondarmor.com/store/index.htm

which is designed for sealing concrete ponds.  It is expensive, but it will probably last longer than most of the "thompson waterseal" type products.  You can buy online or check with local pond retailers - I think most of the local pond supply houses (Russell, Moorehaven, etc...) will have some or be able to get some.

I've never used these myself, so I can't give you any personal experience.

I would check the source water that is coming into your pond, and also consider any potential runoff water sources.

How high is your pH?  It's pretty unusual for western washington source water to come in above pH 8.

Best regards,

-t

Thanks, t, I have found a retailer for Pond Armor and will reseal the pavers this weekend.  As for my pH, I tested my tap water (I live in Sammamish) and it was around 8. I tested the pond and everything is normal except salinity and pH, and from what I've studied thus far, I do not have a problem with decaying waste, I have a problem with something getting into the pond and causing the pH to increase.  The only thing I can think of is the cement pavers along the edge.  The fish seem to be fine, healthy appetite and they are not gasping at the surface (something I read said high pH sometimes causes fish to do this).  I did a water change and measured it the next day and it was closer to tap water level.  It has not rained recently so I'm going to test it again and if it's around tap water pH I'll know it's the pavers (right?).  Regardless, I need to reseal them anyway so this is not a waste of time.  Thanks again and wish me luck!
